  4.     Slovenia (pop. 2.1 million), one of the six republics and
  5. two autonomous provinces that make up Yugoslavia, provided a
  6. reminder last week of why the word Balkanization is a synonym
  7. for divisiveness. Meeting in the capital of Ljubljana, the
  8. republic's parliament overwhelmingly passed a constitutional
  9. amendment allowing Slovenia to secede from the Yugoslav
  10. federation. Though a split is not imminent, the move was seen
  11. as insurance for the Slovenes against growing Serbian
  12. nationalism. Slovenia, which shares borders with Italy and
  13. Austria, boasts the nation's most prosperous economy. But it is
  14. dependent on raw materials from the rest of the country and,
  15. despite growing exports to the West, relies heavily on the
  16. Yugoslav market for its manufactured goods.
